The Active School Flag will be awarded to post primary schools that demonstrate their commitment to achieve a physically educated* and physically active school community.

Stage 1: Try it out

This year allows schools to try out elements of the process to assess if it is a good fit for their school, and to see if they can generate the necessary support.

Stage 2: Certificate

This stage is for schools that are ready to commit to the process. Student leaders focus on finding ways to increase the range, type and frequency of school-based PA opportunities.

Schools may spend one or two years at this stage.

Stage 3: Flag

This stage is for schools where the process has started to embed.

Student leaders expand their focus to raise awareness about community- based PA opportunities and facilities.

Schools may spend one or two years at this stage.

*Post Primary schools wishing to be awarded with the Active School Flag must be able to confirm that they are meeting DEY recommendations in relation to PE timetable provision, at all class levels, and that suitably qualified teachers are timetabled to teach PE.
